It was mid-afternoon in Berlin. Nathaniel was catching up with some much-needed sleep. As he awoke and dispelled the discombobulation that accompanied jet lag, he stretched out under the covers and thought, “It was good to see David again.”

The afternoon sun streamed in through the large windows in the main hall and lit up the apartment; he was happy to be home again. Annika had left a note by the side table, “David called, sounded urgent, but I did not want to wake you up. Welcome back, my love,” Annika.

The lingering scent of Annika on the linen was exhilarating. Overcoming a strong desire to laze in bed for some more time, Nathaniel willed himself off the warm bed and picked up the phone and dialed David.

He listened without interrupting, as David described the attack at his office, when Nathaniel said, “David, can you come over? I could use some help if this is going the way I suspect it is.”

“I had the same thought, mate; besides, I can do with some time away from here as well as brush up on my German. I haven’t had a chance to use it since we left Germany,” said David.

“What about the shop?” asked Nathaniel.

“Martina and Matias can run the place while I’m away. I have my tickets in hand. See you in about 36 hours. There are some serious layovers on the first flight I could find,” said David.

Nathaniel walked into the kitchen to make himself some coffee and switched on the TV. The news anchor was presenting the latest opinion polls that showed German Pride leading the ruling coalition parties by 5-points.

The next major rally for the party is tomorrow, and Nathaniel was not planning to miss it.
